Photos on our walls are more than pretty decor! I always knew that, but recently came across an opinion of a psychologist confirming this!
Photographs displayed on the walls of our homes give children a sense of security and belonging. It tells them that they are loved and cared for, that they are visible and worthy of being part of the family. By displaying photographs prominently we tell the world that we are proud and grateful for our family and experiences we go through TOGETHER. Photographs allow us to reconnect with the feeling of deep happiness, joy and belonging which we all need. One look at your walls after a long hard day might be all that’s needed to put things into perspective.
As a child I never used to see any photographs in our home. I don’t even have any photographs with my mum, because she used to (and still does) hide from the camera. It makes me sad, but also encourages me to BE in the photographs for my children and their children. But also to PRINT photographs as technology can be very unreliable. I am still to decide what to put on our walls but I know it’s a important to make this decision, and rather sooner than later.
“These people have me as part of what they are, that’s why I belong here. This is where I come from.” says Judy Weiser, a psychologist, art therapist and author based in Vancouver.
