Whenever I photograph a family with a new baby I aim to make it as stress free as possible. You are already tired and overwhelmed and I don’t want your newborn session to feel like it’s another thing you have to do when you have a baby. I want the morning we spent together to be a collection of moments when you can hold your tiny child, breath their scent in to remember forever, feel those tiny fingers hold on to your finger. We are likely to talk about the labour, the feeding, the motherhood.
Your home is the best background for your family photographs. It’s intimate, personal, yours. Your children will love seeing the home they were first brought to. You will feel less stressed in your own home and everything you need is at hand. You also can feed your baby in the comfort of your home.
We are likely to hang out in your living room, kitchen, nursery and your master bedroom, wherever I find spots with best light, usually by the window.
Having a bedding that you like is a good idea. I will probably photograph your baby on their own on your bed. Light plain colours work well, but it’s your home and your photographs so go with what pleases your eye.
Don’t worry too much about tidying up: I can move things if they are in the way. I am not coming to judge your home or your housekeeping skills- you have just had a baby!
Because I come to your home, your older children can play and join us as they wish. They can change if the juice gets spilled or show me their favourite book.
are often big and important part of your family, let’s include them in your photographs if they are willing to join.
I am a natural light photographer which means I use the light coming into your home through a window or french doors, on warmer days opening the doors works too. Having a free access to a window is best but most of the time we can work around that.
Time of the day
We often plan newborn session to start at 10.30 am. This is when I find most babies content but it also gives you time to have a shower and coffee. Newborn sessions take around 90 minutes to allow time for feeding and nappy changes. It’s best to plan to have morning free of visitors and midwife visits to allow for a calm and quiet family time.
I don’t bring anything but the cameras as I want your photos to be truly yours. If you have a beautiful blanket made for your baby or a family heirloom you would like included I will be very happy to do that.
I don’t place babies in anything but parent’s arms or a comfortable flat surface. I am not a photographer for everyone, my clients are parents who value timeless over trendy.
When I photograph your family I focus on connection, love, details. I will photograph your family together, each parent with the baby, baby with sibling and pets. Your newborn will have portraits on their own too.
If you would like grandparents or other family members to be in photographs, it is best to invite them towards the end of the session (12pm usually works fine if we start at 10.30am).
What to wear
Mama needs to stay comfortable. We believe black to be a slimming colour but for your newborn shoot try wearing something light in colour and weight. Light knitwear works great. Dark colours or stiff fabrics like denim create a big contrast with baby’s soft delicate features.
Make up is best to be matte as this photographs best in the natural light. if you would like a make up artist to pamper you on the morning of the shoot I can put you in touch with someone who will come to your home.
Dads should stay away from big logos and strong patterns. A simple t-shirt on neutral light colour works great and so does a light shirt with sleeves rolled up. Jeans always photograph well.
Siblings could wear something light and it’s best to avoid Peppa pig and Thomas the tank as it will age your photographs quickly. Classic and simple is best.
New baby could wear a simple onesie or be wrapped in a soft blanket. It’s lovely if baby’s feet are bare as I always take a photograph of those tiny toes.
After the session
I will get back to my home office, download your photographs and make a back up. I will look through all the photos and select the best ones. You don’t need to see photos where your eyes are closed or you are mid sentence or 11 photographs that look very similar. You will get to see 25-30 photographs in the final set.
I will enhance your images and order your prints. I am usually able to deliver your prints around 2.5 weeks after your shoot. Those prints are for you to keep.
If you would like to order a timeless wall piece or an album, you are welcome to see the samples I will bring with me when I deliver your prints.
You will also receive a link to a secure online gallery so you can share photographs with your family and friends.
